The Federal Power Act is a law appearing in Chapter 12 of Title 16 of the United States Code, entitled "Federal Regulation and Development of Power".Enacted as the Federal Water Power Act on Jand amended many times since, its original purpose was to more effectively coordinate the development of hydroelectric projects in the United States.

Legislation, Federal Water. Federal involvement in water resource legislation initially addressed issues of water use, such as managing the commons (e.g., regulating fisheries) and regulating navigable waterways to support navigation and commerce.

As the country grew westward, water legislation was used to fund massive water development projects to increase water supplies for irrigation. Increasing water-quality problems eventually resulted in the amendments to the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, commonly known as the Clean Water Act.

The objective of this act was to restore and maintain the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters.
